A very rare and historically important astronomical instrument has recently been discovered at Durgraj Raigad, the capital fort of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The ‘Yantraraj’ instrument has been found during the ongoing excavation work jointly carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Raigad Development Authority, and Chhatrapati Sambhajiraj himself informed the public about this through a Facebook post.‘Yantraraj’ or ‘Soumyayantra’ was used by ancient astronomers. This instrument was useful for studying planets, determining directions, understanding latitude and longitude, and measuring time. The letters engraved on this instrument, as well as pictures of turtles or snake-like animals, made it possible to estimate the north and south directions.
